I clearly remember I met the Moonee Valley Drifters at the Terminus hotel in 1987. I sat at the old piano in the empty bar and we played a bunch of songs that I knew from records but had never actually played. We sat close together microphones. Just behind me, Tom was singing and thumpin his old Martin guitar, Curly played brushes on his thighs while Rob played a Telecaster, and ex-US Navyman Peter Linden played Pedal Steel like nothing I had heard before. On the left Paul Pyle (complete with his own supply of beer in a personal esky!) played the wildest 2 beat bass. That was a moment. Along with our mutual love of Western Swing Tom introduced me and many others to the joys and sorrows of the Louvin Brothers, Lefty Frizzell, George Jones and Brenda Lee and his own originals.
Geoff Achison is an award winning blues-roots artist from Australia known for his live performances, song-writing, and unique guitar mastery. Geoff began his apprenticeship with legendary Australian bluesman 'Dutch' Tilders establishing himself as a fine lead guitarist before striking out with his own. He released his debut album in the early 90s and began touring throughout the USA, UK & Europe. Geoff's music has been compared favourably to major artists such as Eric Clapton, JJ Cale and the Allman Brothers Band having a solid foundation in the blues but also embracing a variety of music styles. He has won awards for his guitar playing, songwriting and live performances and was honoured in 2011 as official Patron Of the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society.
After honing his skills busking the city streets of Melbourne, Carter turned his attention to writing, recording and playing his own brand of folk and country blues to venues and festivals across Victoria. His one man band live show with acoustic guitar, foot drums and harmonica goes from soaring slide guitar and blues hollers to folk song ballads.
His reinterpretation of old time country blues aims to pay tribute to iconic bluesman of a bygone era such as Skip James, Fred Mcdowell and Robert Johnson, as well as providing a swag of original folk songs.
Heading into the studio with a bunch of songs penned, the resulting album “These Winters they howl” was released in late 2017. Legendary underground institution, Checkerboard (formerly Checkerboard Lounge), deliver a dynamic, soulful well of emotion and playful abandon in collective improvisation over classic blues and soul. World class musicianship meets raw unbridled passion inspired by moment's music and their ability to articulate the greater depth of expression to create seemingly rehearsed pieces out of nothing but great listening and reaction skills. Checkerboard's point of difference has always been playing with different musicians and throwing them into an improvisational hot-seat, a tour-de-force that demands honesty, integrity and the truth of the musician. The current line up of Carl Pannuzzo -vocals/drums, Shannon Bourne -guitar, Amos Sheehan -bass and Tim Neal - Hammond/Sax puts the band at the peak of their co-creative evolution to create unforgettable experiences in music.
