World class musicianship meets raw unbridled passion inspired by moment's music and their ability to articulate the greater depth of expression to create seemingly rehearsed pieces out of nothing but great listening and reaction skills. Checkerboard's point of difference has always been playing with different musicians and throwing them into an improvisational hot-seat, a tour-de-force that demands honesty, integrity and the truth of the musician. The current line up of Carl Pannuzzo -vocals/drums, Shannon Bourne -guitar, Amos Sheehan -bass and Tim Neal - Hammond/Sax puts the band at the peak of their co-creative evolution to create unforgettable experiences in music.

I clearly remember I met the Moonee Valley Drifters at the Terminus hotel in 1987. Just behind me, Tom was singing and thumpin his old Martin guitar, Curly played brushes on his thighs while Rob played a Telecaster, and ex-US Navyman Peter Linden played Pedal Steel like nothing I had heard before. On the left Paul Pyle (complete with his own supply of beer in a personal esky!) played the wildest 2 beat bass. That was a moment. Along with our mutual love of Western Swing Tom introduced me and many others to the joys and sorrows of the Louvin Brothers, Lefty Frizzell, George Jones and Brenda Lee and his own originals.

“Alister is a songwriter of the highest order and a sign that the future of Australian blues is in good hands.” - Lloyd Spiegel, Premier Endorsee Cole Clark Guitars.

It would be a generalisation to group Queenscliff’s Alister Turrill with other young roots players. His playing style blends a true form of blues with complex song writing seldom seen. He’s shared the stage with Jeff Lang, Geoff Achison and Lloyd Spiegel on several occasions and has supported the likes of Charlie Parr (US), Tim Rogers, Ash Grunwald, Kim Churchill, Steve Smyth, Tim Freedman and Shane Howard.

The past two years have seen the new Melbourne resident at his busiest and best yet with his first East Coast Tour (including a well-received slot on the Roaming Buskers Stage at Byron Bay Bluesfest 2017) and first European shows. Following his award winning 2013 debut album ‘Reverence & Resonance’ 2015 single release ‘Road To The Grave’ and 2016 EP ‘A Toast To Better Times’, Alister launched into 2018 with the release of brand new single ‘See You On Your Way’. A deeply personal dark folk song highlighting the struggles associated with mental health in today’s society.
